4 July 1940 Seaplane Anchorage postal dedication cover from Fernandina, Florida.
Independence Day 1940 commemorative airmail postal cover, 6 1/2" width X 3 5/8" height.
The obverse reads CAA [Civil Aeronautics Administration] Seaplane Anchorage over FERNANDINA, FLORIDA over Dedicated to Flying Public over July 4, 1940. On it are six one cent stamps, two each of John James Audubon, Washington Irving and Horace Mann. It is addressed to A. P. Kester of St Petersburg, Florida, who was the Cachet Director of Universal Ship Cancellation Society. The circular date stamp postmark cancellation reads FERNANDINA, FLA. over JUL 4 over 4.30 PM over 1940.
On the reverse is the stamp of the AIRPORT HISTORICAL SOCIETY around SERVICE CROCKER. George Crocker, also of St Petersburg, was the USCS Secretary.
This dedication postal cover is catalogued by the American Air Mail Society as M88.
That Fernandina had a seaplane anchorage, or airport, is not well known.
The Seaplane Anchorage postal dedication cover addressed to George F. Crocker of St Petersburg, Florida, the individual identified above. The single six cent airmail postage stamp gives a fuller view of the cover's obverse than do the six stamps on the upper cover.
